Identity

Many a time we get involved in things that maybe change our view of ourselves. It can be a new team we support or a switch to a different product brand after watching their marketing campaigns. This has increasingly been attributed to a need to identify ourselves with a specific community or symbol.

Now hear me out, yes we can consider economic reasons for some of the things we buy and identify yourselves with, but at the same time, whatever we buy or make use of in the long run identifies who we are. If you were to buy a car and assuming you had a good enough budget for said car, why would you choose the brand that you are thinking of now? Your thought process could be there's the speed, there's the economy approach or reliability of it. That's all true and fair but if you look closer, there's a sense of identity in all those.

But that is more towards material things, stuff we own, and stuff we can easily upgrade. How about communities? What community do you belong to or do you subscribe to? Now, this can be an easy question, you can base your answers on religion,  profession, or the friends you keep. And you wouldn't be wrong. If anything that's as accurate as you can get. And that's fine...

But, what if that wasn't it at all? What if our identity wasn't tied to the people or societies we want to subscribe to? What if our identity was this complex and intricate way of life and thinking that only we can grow, define and even change with the passage of time? What if the only thing that was worth defining was our peace? Or our own selves?

You see, every time we do something that goes within the character that society imprints on us, we become less of who we are meant to be. Every time we let our material things and societal clusters define what or who we should be, we lose an integral part of living. How you define that part is completely up to you. To put it into perspective, ask yourself this, what is the one thing that you are sacrificing by going to that event or buying that car that will get your friends and family talking? If you can truly and honestly answer that question, you may just find what you are sacrificing.
